BIRMINGHAM TOWN HALL, BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM - 2018/01/13: Child holds placard as the 'UK Togolese Diaspora High Council For Democracy and Change' holds a peaceful demonstration outside Birmingham Town Hall, protesting the fifty-year rule of the Gnassingbe family.  Togo, a small nation in West Africa neighbouring Ghana, has seen multiple nationwide protests drawing tens of thousands of people calling for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe since 2005. Protesters have demanded electoral reform, asking for the reinstatement of an erstwhile policy of limiting the Presidency to just two terms. In response, security forces have systematically cracked down on these mass demonstrations. Last year, authorities attempted to quell the rising tide of discontent by blocking mobile and Internet communication for temporary periods.
