(Original Caption) A path of rubble leads to abandoned buildings in this recent view of one area of New York's South Bronx. President Jimmy Carter recently visited the South Bronx and later promised to pump massive aid into the tortured community where more than 1,200 buildings stand empty, gutted, torched and abandoned. In the past two years, firemen have fought 7,000 fires in the South Bronx. More than 2,000 square blocks in the area from the Harlem River to the Bruckner Expressway are devastated and that number is growing at the rate of four a week. More than 250,000 people have been dislocated.
