Four Scenes From Dr. Livingstone's Travels
The first panel depicts the attack on Dr. Livingstone by a lion during his travels through South Africa in the 1850s. As the lion pinned him down, Mebalwe, a local schoolmaster, shot at the lion but was attacked himself until another hunter whose life was saved on an earlier occasion by Livingstone, attacked the lion with a spear. The lion was eventually killed and the three men received bite wounds. The second drawing is based on Livingstone's account of a Hopo or trap: game is rounded up, driven along mile-long hedges, gathered together and eventually driven into a pit at the extremity of the Hopo as shown in the third illustration. The fourth drawing shows hunters gathered around a dead deer as women return with water. (Photo by © CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)
