The Prince Consort National Memorial: "Agriculture

The Prince Consort National Memorial: "Agriculture", by W. Calder Marshall, R.A., 1872. Sculptures on the Albert Memorial, '...opposite the Royal Albert Hall, at Kensington [in London]...four groups, in white marble, upon the corners of the podium which forms the base of the structure, represent "Agriculture," "Manufactures," "Commerce," and "Engineering."...[The Agriculture] group is placed on the south-west angle of the podium. The principal figure is the Genius of Agriculture, crowned with a wreath of corn. She is directing the attention of the agriculturist to the improvements of agricultural appliances which have been effected by the steam-engine and chemistry. She points from the primitive plough, on which he leans, to the steam-cylinder and chemical retort, which are lying below. The female figure seated on the left hand, with her lap full of corn, bears witness to the results obtained by these means. On the right a shepherd boy, with a lamb in his arms and a ewe by his side, has reference to the rearing and breeding of cattle'. From "Illustrated London News", 1872. Creator: Unknown.
