(Original Caption) Willie Shoemaker, sensational 22-year-old jockey, holds up one finger and displays the plaque he received December 31 after bringing home one winner in the first race to finish out the season with a total of 485 wins. The Texas-born rider booted home Mercenary for a seven dollar win in the first, ran out of the money in the second, seventh, and eighth and came in second in the other four races that day. So the final total win was stood at one, but his 485 mark still beat Tony Despirito's 1953 record by 95 victories.
