Anti-gov’t protests continue in Armenian capital Yerevan
YEREVAN, ARMENIA - SEP. 23: Anti-government demonstrations continued in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia on Saturday (Sep. 23) following Azerbaijan's anti-terrorist operation in Karabakh.
Security measures increased in front of the government building due to the protests in the capital amidst counter-terrorism activities carried out by the Azerbaijani army in Karabakh.
According to reports in the Armenian press, clashes occurred between protesters and security forces in Republic Square, where the government building is located, on Thursday, Sep. 21.
During the clashes, security forces deployed sound grenades.
Some demonstrators who attempted to block traffic on main streets in Yerevan, were also detained.
According to the official Armenian news agency Armenpress, at least 28 people have been detained on charges of "organizing mass civil disobedience, calling for the forcible change of the constitutional order, and carrying non-lethal weapons.
