Colombian mercenaries, fighting for Ukraine, clean their weapons during a military exercise on the training ground on August 15, 2023 in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. Not only military volunteers from other countries are fighting for Ukraine, but also hundreds of Colombian mercenaries. Colombian fighters are increasingly drawn to Ukraine because the pay they receive there is much higher than what is normally paid in Colombia. Colombia is fertile ground for recruitment because it has the largest army in South America - after decades of fighting Marxist rebels and drug cartels.
