Miners come out of lift from coal pit from their last shift as the strike begins, Kent Colliery (BBC News 008/72/08EC - 08/01/1972 - AEXZ288W) STORY: The 1972 UK miners' strike was a major dispute over pay between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Conservative Edward Heath government of the United Kingdom. Miners' wages had not kept pace with those of other industrial workers since 1960. Power shortages emerged, and a state of emergency was declared on 9 February. Due to the electricity shortages, enforced power cuts occurred.
