Senator Sanders proposes expanding graduate medication education program

Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders says opening a hearing about healthcare workforce shortages that the need to expand and improve the graduate medical education program was highlighted, as over 10,000 medical school graduates were unable to fill residency slots annually, and the teaching health center program, which enabled residents to work in community health centers and primary care, needed significant expansion; furthermore, increasing student loan debt forgiveness and scholarships through the National Health Service Corps program was necessary to encourage healthcare professionals to serve in rural and urban areas with shortages despite financial challenges.
