The industrial area along the coast provides quite a dazzling display at nighttime, owing to the some 13,000 security lights at the JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation's Muroran Plant. It has been voted as one of the five industrial zones in Japan providing superb nighttime views. The other four are in Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture), Yokka-ichi City (Mie Prefecture), Kita-kyushu City (Fukuoka Prefecture), and Shunan City (Yamaguchi Prefecture).
